Uniform
The school takes great pride in the appearance of its pupils and in the co-operation of parents on this matter. We all need to work together to maintain our high standards. This is extremely important to the general discipline and tone of the school. The overriding factor in our choice is that pupils should wear safe, practical clothing which reflects a smart, dignified appearance.
Uniform requirements From September 1st 2025
The school uniform is available to order online through our suppliers Schoolwear Solutions, the Morleys store in Chilwell or Academy School Uniforms. All pupils must be in school uniform from Years 7 – 11 inclusive.
Branded Items
- All children are required to wear the branded Fernwood clip on tie.
- All children are required to wear the branded Fernwood blazer.
- All children are required to wear the branded short sleeved PE top for PE lessons.
- Children that choose to wear a skirt must wear the branded Fernwood knee-length skirt.
(Please note that all children are permitted to wear skirts, trousers, or shorts (summer term only).
Non-Branded Uniform Items
Children who wish to wear a jumper under their blazer can now wear a non-branded v-neck black jumper. Jumpers are optional but many of our students do choose to wear them, particularly in colder weather. Jumpers are not a replacement for a blazer though and are an optional additional uniform item. The branded jumpers are still available from our main suppliers, and you can still purchase these if you prefer to, however, it’s no longer compulsory to wear the branded jumper if choosing to wear a jumper.
Jumpers should be of a knitted material with a deep V that allows two full stripes of the tie to be visible (as highlighted in the photo below):

PE Kit From September 1st 2025
Please ensure your child has appropriate PE uniform for outdoor PE lessons as they will be outside around 80% of the school year through all types of weather.
Children are not required to have multiple branded items for PE. In addition to their branded short sleeved PE top (which is compulsory) they can choose from the following items to wear in PE to keep them warm or cool:
- Plain black loose fitting shorts.
- Plain black tracksuit bottoms or plain black sports leggings. A small logo is permitted (less than 10cm by 10cm) but they should be free from stripes or patterns please.
- Plain black base layer (which can be worn under their Fernwood short sleeved PE top).
- Plain black crew necked sweatshirt (which can be worn over their Fernwood short sleeved PE top).
- Plain black knee length socks or white sports socks.
- Children will need a pair of sports trainers for PE lessons. They may also be required to have a pair of studs for additional grip when participating on the field in the autumn/winter months. Where studs are required, children will be told with advance notice. Please do not purchase studs in advance of this, as some classes may not require them. Also, children’s feet can grow throughout the year which may mean they have outgrown their studs by the time they need to wear them. Please note: Footwear needs to be ‘fit for purpose’ and provide good support, protection and traction. Canvas plimsolls are not permitted.
- Children are required to have a gum shield for some activities. Your child will be advised in advance of requiring this protective item.
- Children are also required to have shin pads for some activities like Football and Hockey. Your child will be advised in advance of requiring this protective item.
Coats
We encourage our children to wear coats when necessary. Coats should be plain black please and be free of big logos or patterns. However, we do recognise it can be challenging to find a completely logo free coat, so a small logo (no more than 10cm by 10 cm) would be considered acceptable.
Appearance
Jewellery
For health and safety reasons jewellery is not permitted. If a pupil wears jewellery it will be confiscated and returned to parents.
Pupils who wish to have their ears pierced should plan this at the beginning of the summer holiday so that the skin has sufficient time to heal. Small, clear, discreet plastic retainers are permitted to support healing.
Plasters may not be worn to protect earrings or any other piercing.
Hair, Make-up and Nail Polish
Pupils are expected to ensure that their hair is of natural colour (no streaked hair or tips). For health and safety reasons make-up, nail polish, false nails or excessive hair accessories are not permitted. No extreme hair styles i.e. Mohicans or patterns cut into hair. Please check with school if you need clarification or require advice. Pupils who breach the uniform rules will be required to rectify the situation as soon as is practically possible and complete a uniform detention on the same day.
Valuables
Valuables must not be brought into school – this includes electronic devices, mobile phones or internet enabled watches. If pupils have an emergency one-off situation where a mobile phone is required, they must speak in advance to their Head of Year.
If a pupil brings a mobile phone into school without prior consent, it will be confiscated and returned in person only to the parent/carer who will need to come into school to collect it. Pupils found with a mobile phone in their possession in school will immediately receive a C3 detention.
